The candidates endorsed by the League are advocates of important legislation to protect animals.
Issues various candidates will be addressing once elected include banning canned shoot ranches, where caged or tethered animals are shot for amusement; giving counties and municipalities the power to ban cruel animal traps; funding for humane care for stray cats; reform in New York City and Rockland County's animal control systems; and promotion of humane, non-lethal methods alternatives for removing Canada geese from certain areas, in contrast to lethal methods advocated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and NY State Department of Environmental Conservation According to Lisa Virgona, vice-president of the League of Humane Voters' New York City chapter and an Upper West Side voter, "The League of Humane Voters looks forward to working with these candidates after the election to enact laws that will protect animals from vested interests who profit from cruelty." With chapters throughout New York State, the League of Humane Voters works to support the election of candidates for public office who actively support animal protective legislation.
