"Why Does the Wind?" is the first single from Tracey Thorn's new album "Love and its Opposite", an introspective, mid-tempo tune about a woman trying to puzzle out why she's hanging onto an noncommittal lover. Fans of Ms. Thorn's work in Everything But the Girl and her solo albums will not be surprised by or disappointed in this track, which features Ms. Thorn's sweet, clear, steady voice against a background of synthesizer, drums, and bass. (For those unfamiliar with Ms. Thorn, she sounds like a less-throaty, sadder-but-wiser k.d. lang.) I would have liked the track better with a backing vocal (from Ben Watt, say :), but it's good as is.
